St. Mary's Catholic School Counselor

Hello!
Welcome
Welcome to Clara Magallanes' Counseling Website! Â
I am the counselor for St. Mary's Catholic School and I have the joy of working with students through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling.  I also collaborate with school staff, parents and other professionals and community members, in order to best meet the needs of our students.
Services

Classroom Guidance Lessons
I visit each classroom multiple times throughout the school year and have the chance to interact with every student during these lessons.  Lessons typically last 30 minutes in length or more and cover topics such as school readiness skills, goals, and growth mindset, understanding feelings of self and others, empathy, problem-solving skills, friendship skills, study skills, bullying and cyber-bullying education and prevention, social media responsibility, etiquette and safety, kindness, character education, prosocial behavior, preparation for middle school, career exploration, and personal wellness are just a few examples of topics covered by counselors during classroom guidance lessons.

Small Group Counseling
A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers, and to students who are coping with similar life situations.  Groups can have anywhere from 3 to 8 members and usually meet once a week during recess, PE or any other time provided by the teacher for specified number of weeks.

Individual Counseling
Some students can benefit from one-on-one counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges. Counselors help students effectively manage a variety of personal, academic, and social issues. While each student faces his/her own unique challenges, some common issues for involve: confidence/self-esteem, academic pressures, coping with grief, dealing with families in transition, organization, stress/anxiety management, fitting in, communication skills, transitioning to middle school, peer relationships, and crisis management, among others.

How Can I Help?
Reach out
The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family.
I work closely with parents, teachers and other professionals to help each child reach their full potential, promote student success, improve their school experience, enjoy learning and school life.
My services are customized to meet the specific needs of each student and family. I work collaboratively throughout the entire process to obtain the best outcome. Contact me to find out how I can help today.
